This document describes an intermediate-level physics experiment that uses low-cost accelerometers (Wiimotes) to study a system of two coupled oscillators. Students release two masses from various initial positions and measure their accelerations to analyze the normal modes of the system. Fourier analysis of the accelerometer data reveals the frequencies and relative amplitudes of the symmetric and antisymmetric normal modes, which agree with theoretical predictions within 5%. Adding additional mass to one oscillator demonstrates how the normal mode frequencies decrease with increased inertia. This experiment supplements theoretical lessons on coupled oscillators with hands-on data collection and analysis using affordable sensors and computing tools.
