This document summarizes a thesis that applied GIS and remote sensing techniques to site selection for geothermal exploration and development in Iceland. Specifically, the thesis used SPOT satellite imagery and data from geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys to select suitable well sites and a power plant location in the Námafjall geothermal area. For well site selection, the thesis identified geologically suitable areas, overlaid weighted geophysical and fracture maps to further refine the selection, and incorporated environmental factors to produce a final suitability map. Two priority sites were then chosen for initial exploration drilling.
