This document discusses sustainable human resource management (HRM) and how it differs from strategic HRM (SHRM). It identifies six key characteristics of sustainable HRM: 1) managing contradictory outcomes, 2) concern with developing employee capabilities, 3) recognizing both potential positive and negative outcomes, 4) attention to developing and implementing HRM activities, 5) explicitly stating values that inform sustainable HRM, and 6) designing metrics to promote sustainability. Sustainable HRM aims to achieve positive economic, social, environmental, and human outcomes in both the short and long term, whereas SHRM primarily focuses on the relationship between strategy and HRM to achieve strategic business goals.
