 Patrick Macnee was from noble stock, but had a difficult and often 
bizarre childhood (if I told you the details, you would not believe me -
 get the book). I read it as an Avengers fan but was amazed at his life
 and the similarities that melded with his most famous creation. This 
autobiography is written with Mary Cameron, meaning, I assume, it is 
ghost-written. Nonetheless it gives an authentic voice to Patrick 
Macnee. In it he is modest and honest about his not altogether reputable
 past. There seems to be very little ego or self pity, which, once you 
have read this, you might think Mr Macnee is entitled too. It is also 
refreshing to read about an actor grateful for his big break rather than
 moaning about being typecast. This is a book that made me gasp one 
minute, laugh out loud the next. Recommended whether you are a fan of 
the show or not.
