This document is a dissertation that explores the challenges and opportunities for maritime education and training (MET) in the context of the 4th Industrial Revolution. It considers how automation and digitalization are impacting both the shipping industry and MET sector. The study aims to highlight how rapid technological advancement is affecting maritime professionals by examining changes to organizational culture, people, processes, structures, and technology within MET institutions. The author employs content analysis, surveys, and interviews with 127 respondents and 7 teachers to understand these impacts from the perspective of maritime professionals. The findings suggest careful consideration is needed to address challenges and make the most of opportunities, as changes in one area inevitably influence others due to MET being a complex adaptive system.
