This document discusses the limitations of applying lean management principles across food and farming supply chains in the UK. It analyzes the crisis in the UK red meat industry and the government/industry response of promoting lean thinking. While lean practices may be suitable internally for companies, extending them inter-organizationally across entire supply chains is problematic. For multiple retailers, lean principles could increase profitability, but for most participants it may result in dependency on buyers and declining profits due to lack of power and leverage in the supply chain relationships. The article examines these issues through a case study of the beef supply chain.
