Climatic change is widely seen as the biggest environmental challenge of the 21st century. It is also an economic challenge. The energy transition is placed here in a historic perspective, but we show that the marginalization of fossil-based fuels leads to radically new stakes. The ongoing changes are stimulating research by creating new subjects of study and eliciting new methodologies.
