Specifically,thepurposewastocompareshortterm and long termrelationships, giventhatthelatterhavebeenneglectedinpreviousresearch. Twenty-five shorttermdatingandengagedrelationshipsand31 longterm married andcohabiting relationshipswerecomparedonquestionnairesmeasuringeachoftheabovevariables. Contrary tothemainhypothesis,individualsinlongtermrelationshipsdidnotevidencegreatercloseness, althoughtheydidevidencegreaterstrengthofcloseness. Otherdifferences includedmoretime togetherandgreaterillusionsamongdatingcouples, and lessattentiontoalternativesamong marriedcouples.
