This document summarizes the experimental characterization of an ultrafast Thomson scattering x-ray source using three-dimensional time and frequency-domain analysis. Measurements of the electron beam properties and x-ray output are presented and shown to agree well with simulations from a new 3D modeling code. The code calculates time-dependent x-ray spectra produced by linear Thomson scattering of short, intense laser pulses off a relativistic electron beam while accounting for effects of laser bandwidth, focusing, and electron beam properties. This validation of the new modeling tool is important for understanding and designing Thomson x-ray sources.
