This document summarizes an exploratory study that examines six empirical studies on the relationship between self-directed learning and academic performance in web-based learning environments. Three studies were from the US and three were from Asia. The studies used different instruments to measure self-directed learning, with most using the Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale. The analysis found mixed results on the effect of self-directed learning on academic success in web-based environments among the six case studies. More research is needed to better understand this relationship while avoiding potential problems identified in these studies.
