FromNPtoDP . DastheheadoftheNounPhrase In a traditional Principles and Parameters framework (cf. Chomsky 1981), noun phrases were commonly seen as maximal projections of a lexical head N0.ApplyingtheX¹-formattothenounphrase,thelexicalheadN0wassaidto combinewithacomplement(e.g.aPP)formingtheN¹-level,andtheinterme- diate N¹-level with an adjunct (e.g. an AP or PP). The topmost N¹-level combined with the specifier (e.g. a determiner or a prenominal genitive phrase)yieldingthemaximallevelNP. (1) a. Thetranslationofthebook. b. John’stranslationofthebook. NP Spec N¹ N0 PP the translation ofthe book John’s As obvious in example (1) and its configuration, the determiner was treated on a par with the prenominal genitive phrase. This is a very unattractive position, since the same Spec,ƒNP position was occupied by a closed class of functional heads (e.g. determiners), as well as full phrases (e.g. genitive phrases).Theidenticalcategorialstatusofdeterminers, adjectivesandgenitive  MartineCoeneandYvesD’hulst phraseswasbasicallyarguedforbecauseoftheiridenticalprenominalposition (atleastinEnglish). One of the earliest proposalsarguing in favor ofa functional head inthe Noun Phrase can be found in Brame (1982:ƒ321), who specifically states the following:‘‘...IthinkitisamistaketothinkofNastheheadofanNP.One should think in terms of DPs, i.e. determiner phrases, not in terms of NPs.’’ According to him, D(ET) is the head-selector of NP, just as P is the head- selector of PP, infinitival to of VP and COMP of S. One of the main conclu- sionsofBrame’shead-selectortheoryisthefollowing: I would go even farther to suggest that linguists’ shorthand in terms of NP is misleading.SinceDETisthehead-selectorofDET(N),ortousemoretraditional terminology, sinceDETistheheadofNP,andnotNascustomarilysupposed,it wouldbebettertoabbreviateDET(N)asDP,notasNP,andtospeakofdeter- minerphrases,ratherthannounphrases.„Brame(1982:ƒ325) . DparallelsI Abney (1986) is generally said to be one of the first to further develop the hypothesisthatthenounphraseisheadedbyafunctionalelement, identified withthedeterminer(D).Accordingtohim, asemanticprojectionismadeup ofalexicalmaximalprojectionandthevariousfunctionalmaximalprojections above it withoutintervening otherlexical head.
