This document describes a teaching fellowship project that introduced problem-based learning into two concrete technology modules in the civil engineering program at Technological University Dublin. The project replaced traditional laboratory exercises with open-ended design problems requiring students to design and test concrete mixes and aggregates. Students worked in groups to complete the tasks with guidance from instructors. Surveys found that students felt the approach improved their technical knowledge and graduate attributes like problem-solving skills. However, challenges included adjusting to less structured learning and scheduling sufficient time for laboratory work. The project concluded PBL was effective for deep learning but requires smaller groups and appropriate assessment.
