This document is an introduction to a book containing the scientific results of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Council) Priority Programme "System Dynamics and Long-Term Behaviour of Railway Vehicles, Track and Subgrade". The priority programme involved interdisciplinary research into the dynamic interaction between vehicles, tracks, and subgrades. It included 22 research projects across 16 German universities. The research focused on wheel and rail contact, friction, wear and damage; vehicle, track and subgrade dynamics; and modeling the entire railway system. The book presents the findings of the priority programme and survey lectures on related topics.
