Duringthepastfourdecades,certainpolitical,economic,natural,and man-made events have held Alaska in the public eye and kept interest strong:statehoodin,thegreatearthquakein,explorationforoil on the Kenai Peninsula and the North Slope in the s, Alaska Native [Land] Claims Settlement Act in , construction of the Trans-Alaska Pipelineinthemid-s,AlaskaNationalInterestLandsConservationAct in,andthegroundingoftheExxonValdezinwithitspollutionby petroleumofPrinceWilliamSound.Recentlythesecretaryoftheinterior recognizedtwohundredAlaskaNativevillagesastribes,anactionofuncer- tainimplicationsforissuesofvitalimportancetoallAlaskans,Nativeand non-Nativealike,suchasrightstosubsistencehuntingandfishingandre- lationshipsbetweenfederal,state,andtribalgovernments.Evenmorere- cently,theUnitedStatesSupremeCourthasruledinseveralcasesbearing upon these issues.
