This document summarizes research on using patient-specific biomechanical modeling of the breast to assist with breast cancer detection and treatment. Such models aim to help co-locate tumor information between medical imaging modalities, predict tumor location during biopsy and surgery, and evaluate treatment effectiveness. Significant challenges remain in accurately determining loading/boundary conditions during procedures and characterizing individual tissue properties. Addressing these challenges could allow simulating more complex procedures like needle biopsies and tumor removal surgeries. Widespread clinical use has potential to improve cancer diagnosis and patient outcomes.
