This document summarizes a journal article that examines how different patterns of information technology (IT) use by suppliers impact coordination activities with buyers and supplier performance. The study tests a model linking two patterns of IT use (exploitation and exploration) to two types of coordination (operational and strategic), and how these coordination activities then promote organizational benefits. Using survey data from 241 computer industry suppliers, the study finds that exploitation IT use leads to operational coordination, exploration IT use leads to strategic coordination, and both are needed to achieve a full range of benefits. The findings provide insight into how IT use can impact supplier coordination and performance.
