This document provides an introduction to a course on process control and instrumentation. It discusses the objectives of a chemical plant to receive raw materials and produce products in the most economical way while meeting safety, production specifications, environmental, operational, and economic requirements. To maintain these requirements, an external control system is needed. The control system aims to separate the influence of external disturbances, ensure stability of the chemical process, and optimize process performance. As an example, a tank heating system is described and how a control system could be implemented to maintain the liquid temperature at its desired value by measuring temperature, comparing it to a setpoint, and adjusting the steam flow rate through a control valve based on the error signal.
