Temperature variations within pallets of berries were found to significantly impact shelf life, with 57% of berries arriving at packinghouses having insufficient shelf life for longer supply routes. Uneven pre-cooling also led to uneven shelf life that was invisible. Using simple temperature measurements and a "first expiring first out" approach can help avoid waste. Shelf life prediction should account for how temperature history impacts the limiting quality attribute. Advanced methods using air temperature can highly accurately predict product temperatures to maximize shelf life prediction.
