This document describes the IMAGE study, which evaluates an intervention combining microfinance with gender and HIV training to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa. The study is a collaboration between microfinance organization Small Enterprise Foundation, the Rural AIDS and Development Action Research Programme, and the South African National Department of Health. It aims to develop and test an innovative approach to HIV prevention that addresses both individual risk factors and underlying social and economic issues like poverty and gender inequality. The intervention provides microloans alongside training to promote gender equity and HIV education. The study will evaluate the impact of this combined approach on households' ability to cope with HIV/AIDS and avoid infection.
