In preparing for this conference we noted that there was a lack of rigorous research that has been done on the topic of sovereign wealth funds. Hence this volume was created to fill this gap, partly reflectingthecontentofthatconference,alongwithsomeadditionalmaterial.The timingofthisconferencewasaptgiventhatitcorrespondedwithoneoftheworst weeksoffinancialmarketcrisisthattheworldhasexperienced.Theviewofandthe potentialroleforsovereignwealthfundsintheglobaleconomyquicklychangedin theresultingfinancialmarketturmoil.Thisvolumealsotriestoreflectsomeofthis morecurrentdebate.Wearegratefultotheauthorsofthepapersinthevolumewho wereabletoprovideuswithabalancedandthoughtfulanalysisanddiscussionof sovereignwealthfunds,andwhohavebeenenthusiasticinsupportingtheideaof thisvolume.WealsothankNicoleMiesforsupportinproducingthemanuscript.
