This document discusses a study on the distinction between semantic and pragmatic meaning with reference to third year English students. The study aims to investigate the relationship between language use and socially determined constraints on use, and show the similarities and differences between pragmatic and semantic meaning. It also aims to explain how pragmatics and semantics contribute to the overall communicative value of interactions, through analyzing errors in a cloze test given to students. The study is limited to third year students at the Department of English of a college in Iraq for the 2008-2009 academic year. The research hopes to improve students' English achievement and provide value for those interested in language use and its relationship to society.
