This document discusses the relationship between government alternation and political corruption. The author aims to understand if political competition, specifically the occurrence of different parties alternating in government, plays a role in constraining corrupt behaviors among elected officials. The author develops two hypotheses: 1) Structures that increase the possibility of alternation help reduce corruption; 2) Countries with higher past levels of alternation have a greater ability to control corruption. Cross-sectional analysis of 32 democracies from 1946-2004 partially supports the hypotheses, finding that only ideological alternation constrains corruption, while economic competition, independent judiciaries, Protestant religions, and democratic consolidation also play a role.
