Foreveryfoottheputterheadmovesfromtheball,theputterheaditselfshouldmoveinsidefrom1/8to3/4ofaninch, dependingontheset-upmeasurementsofthegolfer. Steptwo Addresstheballandplacetheputterheadbehindtheball.Now,simplymovetheputterheadbackand through,maintainingcontactbetweentheHEELoftheputterandThePuttingArc.Visuallycheckthat theputterfaceisalignedwiththelinesontopofThePuttingArc.Allowtheputterheadtonaturally moveupwardduringboththebackandforwardstroke. Stepthree Placeaball onthecenterlineofyourputterface,orapproximately1-1/2"to2"fromthearcsideofThe PuttingArcwhilemakingcertainthebackoftheballrestsevenwiththecenterPUTTERFACE ALIGNMENTLINE.(seebackpagefordiagram) 6 Stepfour MakeastrokeasinStep2,keepingyourEYESontheBACKoftheball.FEELtheproperpathand alignmentoftheputterhead. Stepfive Watchyourballgointotheholeandsensethepathoftheputterduringthisperfectputtingstroke. Important Tips Concerning Drill #2: Youshouldstrokeonlytentotwentyballsinonespot. Afteryouhavelearnedtheconceptstotheputtingstroke,alternatebetweenDrill#2andDrill#3every10putts.This willpreventyoufromunconsciouslybuildingasideforceintoyourputtingstroke. What are the basic concepts to be learned? Youarelearningaputtingstrokewithnomanipulationofthehands. Youarelearningtokeeptheputterface“square”totheputterpathinsteadofsquaretothetargetline. Thesizeofthe circleandtheangleoftheplaneareexactlydeterminedbyspecificphysicaldimensionsofthegolferinhis/herputting stance. Thedimensionsarethespinalpivotpoint,thehorizontaloffsetofthispointfromtheball,andthedistancefrom theheeloftheputtertothesweetspotoftheputter. ThePuttingArcisavailableinabasicsizethatwillfitawiderangeofgolfers. Withthisstandardmodel,theheelof theputtershouldbelessthan1/8"fromthecorrectarcatapoint13"fromthecenterofThePuttingArcformostgolfers. Foramoreaccuratefitting,ThePuttingArcDeluxecanbespeciallyorderedusingthegofer’scriticalmeasurementsas mentionedabove. Thisspecialunitwillbehandgroundtoveryclosetolerancesaccordingtoacomputer-generated template. AcopyofthistemplatewillalsobeshippedwiththefinishedPuttingArc. Thistemplatewilllistthegolfer’s name,date,criticaldimensionsandthearcitself,allofwhichwillbeavaluablereferencepointforfutureuse. Tovisualizeasimplifiedversionoftheactualarc(ignoringtheupwardtraveloftheputterandtheheel/sweetspot dimension),imagineaplywoodcirclewitha51"radius, (agoodaveragedistancefromthespinalpivotpointtotheball.) Now,takethiscircleoutdoorsathighnoonandholdithorizontalabovetheground. Theshadowprojectedon the groundwillbeaperfectcirclewitharadiusof51".ThiswouldbethearcofThePuttingArcifthegolferlaidonthe groundandswungtheputterhorizontally. Believeitornot,thiswouldbeaveryaccuratewaytoputt,ifthepivotpoint andballpositioncouldbereliablyrepeated. Next,holdthislargeplywoodcircleperfectlyverticaltotheground. Theshadowcreatedwouldbeastraightlinethat is102”long. Thislineisaformofanellipse,andifthisellipsewereusedforThePuttingArc,bothsideswouldbe straightandparallel. Aputtingstrokeinwhichtheaxisofrotationishorizontalwouldresultinastraight-lineputter headmovement.Thisisobviouslyaverygoodwaytoputt,sinceballpositionvariationwillhavenoeffectontheinitial directionoftheputt. ThisisprobablyonereasontheUSGAdoesnotallowputterswiththeshaft90degreestotheputter head.Itisalsoaveryhardthingforthehumanbodytodo,andyoureyeswillnotbeabovetheball,foroptimum alignment. TheaboveexamplesarethetwoextremesofThePuttingArc. Mostgolfersfallinbetweentheseextremes,withtheir puttingplane(theplywoodcircle)atanangletotheground. Theexactangleofthiscircleisdeterminedbythegolfer’s measurementsandtheresultingshadowonthegroundistheellipsementionedabove,theoneusedtomanufactureThe PuttingArc. ThePuttingArcworksforshortputters,bellyputtersandlongputtersequallywell. Forlongputters,somegolfers holdtheendagainstapartoftheirbodyandpivottheclubaroundthispoint. Inthiscasethecriticalgolfer’s measurementsarebasedontheendoftheputterandnotthespinalpivotpoint. However,ifthegolferanchorsthelong putterinhis/herchestorbellybuttonandallowsthehands,armsandshoulderstorotatewhenputting,thenthecritical measurementsarethesameasforashortputter. ThePuttingArcallowsanygolfertoquicklylearnaputtingstrokewhichhastheminimummovingparts,relyingona simple,naturalrotarymotioncenteredaroundaspecificpointonthegolfer’sspine. Nomanipulationofthehandsor putterfaceisrequiredtomakethisstroke.
