My relatively short and unpretentious&nbsp;Einführung&nbsp;in die&nbsp;wellenmechanik&nbsp;will be replaced by a treatise in three&nbsp;volumes, each work complete in itself, the first of which is now published."--Pref.The general plan of the&nbsp;Einführung&nbsp;in die&nbsp;wellenmechanik&nbsp;was preserved&nbsp;inasmuch as the first volume (replacing to some extent the&nbsp;first chapter of the German book) gives a general survey of the whole&nbsp;subject, or a first approach to it, using only elementary mathematics.&nbsp;As can be seen from the Contents, this first volume is fairly complete&nbsp;in itself, covering—although perhaps in a somewhat superficial&nbsp;way—the entire field of wave mechanics and of the new quantum.The main object of the second volume is the&nbsp;development of the mathematical ideas which form the most general and most&nbsp;adequate expression of the physical principles embodied in the new mechanics.&nbsp;After a review of the correspondence between the&nbsp;new mechanics and&nbsp;classical mechanics, it will give a thorough presentation of the transformation&nbsp;theory and develop upon this basis the perturbation theory,&nbsp;with some illustrations. This will be followed by a relativistic refinement&nbsp;of the general theory, the investigation of the spin of the electron,&nbsp;and finally, by extensions to problems of many particles and of quantum electrodynamics.The third volume will give a systematic treatment&nbsp;of various special&nbsp;problems connected with the structure of matter&nbsp;(complex atom,&nbsp;molecules, crystals) and with the radiative and&nbsp;non-radiative interaction&nbsp;between material particles or bodies (collision&nbsp;phenomena, optical&nbsp;effects, and so on).
